Frequently asked questions
Licensing, devices, testing and data — the common questions.
Licensing & activation
Does the software need a license?
Yes. After accepting the terms on first launch, activate with a license code. Each code can be activated once and is bound to the computer it was activated on; you don't need to activate again on later launches.
How do I get a license? Can I just buy one?
Two ways:
- Buy it in the app: from v1.0.8 the activation screen offers “Buy a permanent code (CNY 99)”; pay with Alipay and the software activates automatically. See Pricing & licensing.
- Contact us: for trials, bulk or business licenses use the Contact & licensing page.
“License code invalid” — what now?
First check for typos (you can paste the whole code; it is case-insensitive). A code already used on another computer, or one that is no longer valid, is reported as invalid — contact whoever provided the code.
Is a license code valid on both Windows and Mac?
A code is one code, one computer: a Mac and a Windows PC count as separate devices. If you use both, activate a code on each computer.
Do I need to re-activate after changing computers or reinstalling the OS?
The license is bound to the computer. After reinstalling: for a purchased permanent license, click “Restore activation” on the activation screen — no code needed. New computer: it cannot be moved by yourself; contact us and we will re-issue it. If you activated with a code and a new PC or reinstall invalidates it, ask whoever provided the code to unbind it.
Can I get a refund?
Yes. A permanent device license can be refunded on request within 7 days of payment, after manual review; the license is revoked on refund. Email us with the time of purchase and the “machine code” shown on the software's activation screen. See Pricing & licensing.
Devices & connection
Which devices are supported?
4G / 5G CPEs from several mainstream brands are supported (account + password, password-only and numeric-command logins), and more models are being added.
If the software doesn't recognise a device, use New-device collection: enter the device's web login, the software collects device information read-only, export the encrypted log and send it to the developer — a later version can then support it.
Does it change my device's settings?
No. It only reads network parameters from the device's web pages — no configuration changes, no reboots. Use it only on devices you own or are authorised to access.
Connect can't find or reach the device?
- Check the cable and power.
- Make sure the PC's adapter has received an address from the device.
- If the device needs a login, enter it once when prompted.
- Don't retry wrong passwords repeatedly — devices may lock the login.
Testing & results
Speeds look low or unstable?
- Use a wired adapter and keep the PC online only through that cable (turn Wi-Fi off).
- Close downloads, video and cloud-sync apps that use bandwidth.
- Keep both units on the same test server (the default “Auto” does this).
- Let the unit settle at each angle before starting, and don't move it during a test.
How long does a test take, and how much data does it use?
A run takes about a minute. A full speed test typically uses tens to hundreds of MB, so mind your data costs.
Can I close the app during a test or while a report is generated?
Please don't. Wait for the test or report to finish; at any other time closing the window quits the app, and your data is already saved.
Can I record network info without testing speed?
Yes. Switch on Network-only next to the “Test records” title, use Write to store the cell info, and type the speeds in yourself.
Data, installation & updates
Where are my data and reports stored?
One folder per test (named by date and time), holding the test data and the generated Excel / PDF files. Windows: %LOCALAPPDATA%\CPEAutoTest\data\runs\; Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/CPEAutoTest/data/runs/.
Does the software upload my test data?
No. Test data, device info, history and reports stay on your PC. The software goes online only to activate and periodically verify the license; checking for updates, uploading logs and sending feedback happen only when you choose to. See the privacy notes.
System requirements?
Windows: Windows 10 / 11 (64-bit). The interface opens in its own window using the built-in Microsoft Edge (or Chrome if Edge is missing). Installation does not need administrator rights; the program is installed in your user folder.
macOS: macOS 11 or later, on Intel and Apple silicon. The interface opens in its own window using Google Chrome (Microsoft Edge or Brave also work), so one of them must be installed; if none is found the default browser is used.
Speed tests and license verification need internet access on both platforms.
Windows says “unrecognized publisher”, or antivirus blocks it?
The software is not commercially code-signed, so Windows may warn on first run. Click “More info → Run anyway”, or add the install folder to your antivirus allow-list. You can compare the SHA-256 value on the download page to confirm the file is intact.
On a Mac it says the developer can't be verified, or the app is damaged?
The Mac version is signed with an Apple Developer ID and notarized by Apple, so a normal download should not trigger this. If it does, the download is probably incomplete or altered: compare the SHA-256 value on the download page (run shasum -a 256 filename in Terminal) and download again if needed.
How do I update?
Click Check for updates on the About page; a new version is downloaded right there. On Windows it installs automatically and reopens; on Mac it opens the .dmg and quits the app — drag the new version into the Applications folder to replace the old one (your license and test data are unaffected). You can also get the latest installer from the download page at any time.
Is there a full guide?
Yes — see the user manual.
